Pre-School
Would you like to hear more than “good” and “not so good” when asking children how they feel?
The Gefühlsmonster cards allow children to playfully talk about their feelings, even when things get tough.
With the Gefühlsmonsters you can teach children early on how to deal with emotions in a playful way. Use them to help them get to know and name feelings, for exchanges during your morning circle or to resolve conflicts. Or childen can just colour them in in their favourite colours. The cards are also good for facilitating understanding for both sides in a conversation with dissatisfied or overburdened parents.
Example: How it could work
“One of our five-year-olds had been participating in the lunch circle for quite some time, but never wanted to express himself. I offered him again and again that he too could choose a monster card, but he always refused – no, he doesn’t want to.
Then one day the boy suddenly stands up, takes a few steps towards the monsters, but then turns around again and sits down. A little later he gets up again, gets the ‘carpet monster’
and holds it in front of his face.
I then ask him if he to say something about his choice – “No.” Then I ask him if I might guess what the card might mean. A tentative nod. “Are you afraid to speak in front of the children?” Another nod and relief.
This experience broke the ice for the boy, and he has been participating in most lunch circles ever since.”
